WOW724 Fl 282 Kolibri (Grey]
Â
The Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri (Hummingbird) was a WW2 German intermeshing rotor helicopter, and the first mass-produced helicopter in history. Designed by Anton Flettner, the twin contra-rotating, intermeshing blades eliminated the need for a tail rotor, making it highly stable and manoeuvrable. Developed as an observation and reconnaissance craft, the Fl 282 was used effectively by the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) for convoy protection and artillery spotting.
Intended roles of Fl 282 included ferrying items between ships and reconnaissance. However, as the war progressed, the Luftwaffe began considering converting the Fl 282 for battlefield use.  Towards the end of WW2 most of the surviving Fl 282s were stationed at Rangsdporf, in their role as artillery spotters, but gradually fell victim to Soviet fighters and anti-aircraft fire.
Only around 24 to 30 prototypes and production models were built before Allied bombing of the BMW Munich plant halted production. Only a single intact example survives today.
