Hauptmann Rolf Pingel (1 October 1913 – 4 April 2000) 
I./JG 26
Hauptmann Rolf Pingel flew a Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4, an “Emil” variant, as the Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG 26, November 1940, based at Audembert on the Channel coast during the Battle of Britain’s later stages.
Hauptmann Rolf Pingel s credited with 6 aerial victories during the Spanish Civil War and a further 22 aerial victories on the Western Front of WW II. He flew 550 combat missions, including approximately 200 in Spain.
On 10 July, he was shot down, while attacking an RAF Short Stirling bomber, as it was returning from a raid, his Bf 109 was hit by the defensive fire of the bomber. He then came under attack from a Spitfire which resulted in him making a forced landing near Dover. He was taken prisoner, sent to Canada as a POW and was released in 1947.
Pingel’s aircraft, the Bf 109 F–2, was returned to flying condition, it was briefly flown for evaluation testing until it crashed on 20 October 1941, killing the pilot Flight Officer Marian J. Skalski
