In the British Army of the Napoleonic era, the sergeant’s pike, officially known as a spontoon or half-pike, was a 7 to 9 foot polearm and was not only a vital weapon, but also a tool of command. It was standard for sergeants of the Centre Companies and Foot Guards. At the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Colour Sergeant Switzer of the 32nd Foot famously used his spontoon to impale a French officer who was trying to seize the regimental colours.
