WOW231: The CG-4A Waco (Hadrian in British service) was one of the most widely produced gliders of WW2 with nearly 14000 units being produced. CG-4A’s first saw action during the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943, however inexperience and poor conditions contributed to heavy losses.  Waco’s next saw action in Normandy, followed by Holland, the Rhine crossing and in the Far East. Although the larger British Horsa could carry more troops the Waco could land in much smaller spaces. The Waco could also be picked up from the ground by an aircraft flying above it by the use of a hook attached to a C-47 Dakota,  this system was first used for the rescue of downed aircrew in New Guinea.
